The Food Depot in Douglas County was completely flooded. PHIL SKINNER, pskinner@ajc.com
Sometimes I feel I’m a very selfish person, I’m not an only child but I am the baby. My mother has been involved in church in one way or another since I could remember and for a long time, I used to wonder as a teenager how she could give of all her time and efforts to help someone else. As I grew up my question were more geared toward weather that person (receiving) was doing right, and deserved what was given.
Recently in my home state of Georgia they had a serious flood causing great damage to nice neighborhoods and poor neighborhoods. In times like these we always see that mother nature does not discriminate. The devastation is great and many needs are not being met, this calls for individuals, communities and others to come together and help one another. My former Pastor Shaun King has been instrumental in heading a front for the FloodATL victims with HopeATL.com. During crisis like this he seems to lend a hand early and often. Today I wanted to do something like that, to help someone without asking for anything back.

I’ve been afraid most of my life to give of myself (fully), I think because when you give it seems like your always giving and no one cares about your needs (I told you I’m selfish). Although I have given somethings to help others in need, mostly money but sometimes possessions. I guess I never realized how much help you can really do when you give of your time. I don’t wanna turn this post into an about me issue but I wanted to tell you where I’m coming from.
I have been in transition to Florida for over a month now, and I’m finally moving all my stuff out of my house this weekend. I have been living in my place since February of 2007 when I was then in transition going through the hardest part of my life Divorce. I guess I bring this up because when I decided to move on with my life I had people who helped me. My father helped me obtain a car because I was broke, he didn’t ask for much and has always given me what I needed. A great friend of mine Garland let me stay with him and his family for 4 months and only ask for a small amount of money as rent while I was in transition. So while I have been selfish others around me have been giving, thoughtful, and considerate.
Today I want to help by giving to someone in need, someone who understands that people are just people and we all do change and care. I have various items in my house that I want to get rid of, and at first I was gonna go to craigslist.org and post the items as a first come first serve. Whoever can get the items can do so Free of charge, but then I thought well hold on. What about the Atlanta Flood victims they need these items more than anyone I could ever think of, so I’m giving the following items that should help anyone in need.
- Couch with let out Queen size bed (maroon)
- Smaller couch (light color)
- Two Ikea end tables (Black)
- TV stand (wood look)
- 19′ TV
- DVD player
- Queen bed with box spring (6 months old)
- If need I have dishes, Glasses, and Cookware
If I could find a single parent, or someone with a family this is where I would love the items to go, there is one thing. I can’t deliver the items, and I’m only in town this weekend Saturday & Sunday. So who ever wants the items and was affected by the flood please contact me 678-608-0395. Whoever shows up with a truck can haul all these items off for someone else to enjoy in transition, like I was almost two years ago.
Can I ask of you my online, twitter, brightkite, plurk, facebook friends please RT this story so that someone can see it and be blessed as I have been.
Thanks,
Jayson Flint

Hello !Jay
I have to take a minute to say that your heart for people never ceases to amaze me. Not only do you talk the talk, but you WALK THE WALK. Your passion is humbling. Having lived through my Family In New orleans Hurricane Katrina, I know first hand what this type of devestation is like and my heart aches for the people of Atlanta right now. People are hurting in ways right now that is almost impossible to imagine. If it were at all possible, I would be volunteer everyday with relief efforts just like I did in New orleans after the storms wreaked My Grandma house and others . . ….It is in times like these that we, as Christians are called to action. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE CALLED TO DO….
Thanks for sharing this story. It has me considering what I need to be doing in terms of making a contribution back to society, whether it’s through volunteer work or other philanthropic activities. Rest assured that one day, this honorable gesture will come back to you in a most positive way.
Thanks for the comment Jo
Thanks Ray I’m starting to understand it can be any gesture even small.
